How they work

Scottish Water sets the charges each year and your council collects them with council tax. Unlike council tax they don't vary by council. Homes on a water meter are charged differently. For 2026/27 the charges rose by 8.67%.

Discounts and reductions

  • Household discounts and exemptions, such as the single person discount and the disabled band reduction, generally apply to water and sewerage too.
  • Second homes and empty homes pay the full water and sewerage charges, without the council tax discount or premium.
  • Households getting Council Tax Reduction can get up to 35% off water and sewerage through the Water Charges Reduction Scheme, which councils apply automatically.
